Tachograph Information

What is a tachograph?

The tachograph is essential to the life of a commercial lorry or coachdriver. It’s a special device which records specific information on both the vehicle and the driver such as driving time, speed and distance. Its purpose is to ensure that all drivers and employers adhere to the laws on drivers’ hours. Historically, tachographs used a paper chart record, but all new vehicles now use a digital system, whereby the driver uses their own card inserted into the vehicle unit.

Do I need a tachograph?

If you drive a heavy goods vehicle or passenger-carrying vehicle and it comes under certain EU or AETR rules, then the law then requires you to have a tachograph fitted. You can check the rules here.

You don’t have to use a tachograph if your vehicle isn’t covered by EU rules or if it’s exempt from EU rules on drivers’ hours.

Are there different types of tachographs?

Yes. There are two different types of tachographs. These are digital or analogue. If your commercial vehicle was registered on or after the 1st May 2006, then it must be fitted with a digital tachograph. Otherwise you can use an analogue tachograph.
